Find Mountain Plover

Another Colorado speciality found on eastern plains during summer months.  This is an Audubon Watchlist species. Similar in size to the ubiquitous Killdeer, the Mountain Plover is one of North America's endemic grassland bird species. Once plentiful on the short grass prairies of western North America, this species has declined steadily with the alteration of prairie habitat, and the concurrent reduction in the number of herbivorous mammals (such as bison, elk, pronghorn and prairie dogs) with which it is closely associated. Based on Breeding Bird Survey data, the global population of Mountain Plovers has declined by 50 % since 1966.
