Polly Wren Neldner Burrowing Owl near La Veta?

Hi Gary, This morning we spotted a Burrowing Owl on Hwy 160, at the Valley Road cutoff to La Veta. When we returned from Lathrop State Park 2 hours later he was still there...appeared to be all by himself...not much prairie dog activity...a newer "town"...although we have heard of these little guys being out by the airstrip near Walsenburg...that is almost 20 miles away...is it unusual for them to be this high...about 7,000 feet? Would appreciate your input. Polly Neldner Continue

ARDonoghue Where's my Mockingbird?

Gary has posted that there's a new yard life bird in his Nunn habitat and I sure wish it would come to visit me. I really like Northern Mockingbirds. I didn't see them growing up in Michigan, but when we moved to New Jersey I got the full exposure. My yard was always occupied by 2 or 3 breeding pairs. I enjoyed their constant variety of calls, even when they went on all night long, the flash of wings as they flew off, the babies on the ground begging for food upon first leaving the nest. I've w… Continue

zoe ann nishimuta Rose-breasted Grosbeak

A Rose-breasted Grosbeak just landed on the rail and sat there a few minutes while I was out here on the deck. How beautiful! I have never seen one before. We have Evening Grosbeaks and Black-headed Grosbeaks at the feeders regularly. Wow, I can't get over how strikingly beautiful his red breast was! Continue

Sheryl D. Brandt Help with identification

I would really appreciate any help I can get with identifying the bird in the attached pic. I can't find him in my Audubon Field Guides. He's been around for a little over a week in my backyard. He feeds on the ground and walks fast instead of hopping. I'm recently retired, and thoug… Continue

Carol D. Barr A Chukar

On my morning walk with my pups, I noticed a flash of red out of corner of my eye among the leaves along a chain link fence. Thinking it was a piece of trash I allowed my eyes to skim right by before my brain became cognizant of the striking bars of black against the white background of soft feathers. I slowed my pace but kept walking to keep my dogs from getting curious. Not wanting to cut my pooches walk short, I told myself the bird would be gone by the time I got back with my camera anyway.… Continue

ARDonoghue Life and Yard Birds this weekend

It's been an amazing weekend in my yard. The recent rains have cause spring to really spring - the serviceberry, crabapple, lilacs, cherry, apple, basket of gold alyssum and tulips are all in full bloom. There are 3 Western Chorus Frogs singing from my little 5' diameter garden pond. And the birds are just falling out of the sky into my yard. Here's the list for this weekend (FOS - first of spring; LB - Life Bird; YB - Yard Bird First): Swainson's Hawk American Kestrel Mourning Dove Eurasia… Continue

Carol D. Barr Asphalt

Last week I was infatuated with my local critters. Asphalt, now an adult, was a baby bunny I found spinning in circles on my neighbor's driveway last summer in the full 100 degree sun. I easily scooped her up. She had no signs of injuries, but was definitely in shock. Later, a Native… Continue

Polly Wren Neldner Great Horned Owls

As I stepped out the door to take our dog for his late night stroll, I was delightfully surprised by calm...for the first time in nearly two weeks the wind was not howling! Then I heard 2 Great Horned Owls calling close...they seemed to be calling in tandem...one right after the other...then from farther away I heard another...then finally from a different direction and even further away I heard yet another! 4 at one time is a record for me...I lingered just a while longer that I needed to just… Continue

Bob Canter Today at Two Ponds NWR

I get to Two Ponds National Wildlife Refuge in Arvada about once a week. It was the best spot I visited today, because the prairie part, which is open, isn't focused around water. Species seen: Red-tailed Hawk Mourning Dove 2 Nothern Flicker 4 Blue Jay 4 Black-billed Magpie 5 American Robin 5 European Starling 10 Red-winged Blackbird 3 House Finch 4 Most of the birds were in cotttonwoods, along the Church Ditch. The Blue Jays and Robins loved it there. The Red-tailed is often over or in the pond… Continue

Polly Wren Neldner Good day

Today we went up to Pueblo Reservoir, and while we did not see a great deal...what we did see was special! We stopped below the dam and Paul started scanning with the scope...and the first things he focused on were 3 Long-tailed Ducks (1 Male, 2 female)! Only the second time we have seen this species. The first time was in Alaska...so this was a first for the lower 48 for both of us. At Valco Ponds in amongst the Common Mergansers was a single male Red-breasted merganser. That was a lifer for P… Continue

Jay Belsan Eagles ARE Back to Lake McConaughy

The Eagle Viewing Center on Lake Ogallala is not open yet, but there are plenty of eagles to see. The viewing center usually opens around Christmas, but I have not seen the announcement yet. The Eagle Viewing Center, just below the power plant, is manned during the season so it is a great place to start your Lake McConaughy/Lake Ogallala birding experience. In addition to the eagles, there are White Pelicans, Geese, Cranes, Merganzers, and ducks that can be seen this time of year. I spotted at l… Continue

Beverly November Birds

Well, I'm happy to report I can stop whining about the lack of birds in my yard. You might remember, I started birding this past February...so I don't have a full year's cycle under my belt yet. I had no idea birds just up and dissappear in October. It was shocking, bewildering and a little scary, if ya ask me. How one can go from hundreds of birds at the feeders in the yard to zip for days at a time is beyond me! But...all is well and all my little buddies are returning. I'm participating in C… Continue
