Marie, I guess I was too literal when I read "black hawk"......hehe. I was too excited thinking of the possibility of seeing a Black Hawk to realize what you were actually saying. Sorry about that!
Anyway, no, I haven't tried making my own suet, even though I've thought about it. However, I do put out 3 cakes of suet that I buy at the store for $0.92/ea and enjoy watching the Chickadees, Flickers, Nuthatches, and Downy Woodpeckers enjoy them. I occasionally get Grackles; but, not very often at all. So, the birds that I put them out for are the ones that devour them. One of the cakes is in a cage that is wedged in a short tree stump that is shaped like a "V", allowing the Flickers and Downy's simulate their natural feeding habit.
Plus, I put out a hanging block of seed that the Chickadees, Nuthatches, and Downy's really enjoy as well.

Thanks for commenting on my Hawk. This guys has caused me to not count birds for the GBBC this year.
I have counted birds for the last 5 years, but he has hung around here the last few days again, and has scared all the little birds away. I do have a flock of about 50 Eurasion Collared doves that I can count. Your pictures are great.
Thanks for adding me as your friend, I too am pretty much a loner when it comes to my birds. My friends just don't get it.
Looking forward to sharing pic with you

Thank you for your kind words... I thought it might be a Cooper's Hawk...or perhaps a Sharpie. Dang, it is astounding what I do not know! Have you seen Bill Schmoker's Blog? (http://brdpics.blogspot.com/) I've never met him, but he teaches me a LOT!!!

Yes I took the picture a couple of weeks ago. Usually my bird photos aren't the best, but this one actually turned out.
The "Bible" for all birdwatchers when it comes to identification is The Sibley Guide to Birds by David Allen Sibley. "Don't leave home without it". Consider picking one up if you don't own one already. Gary

Great to hear from you!
It was so good to hear from you.
Take care and happy birding in your backyard, which I do the same in my backyard with a bunch of feeders, etc. Love it!
